Stephen Herney, MA, MFTC
Stephen is a marriage and family therapist candidate (MFTC) in the state of Colorado. He received his MA in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in marriage and family therapy, from Azusa Pacific University in Southern California. He also has an MA in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary and a BA in Religious Studies from Westmont College.
Stephen has experience working with teens, adults, and couples, walking beside them in their struggles as well as helping them to discover meaning both for themselves and in their relationships. He has worked with those struggling with anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal ideation, and other interpersonal challenges. Stephen is passionate about working with anyone who is seeking support and is ready to work collaboratively with you to help you reach your goals. He is particularly interested and has experience in working with men of all ages and the specific challenges they present in therapy as well as with couples who are seeking either premarital or marital counseling. And for those who desire it, he is able to integrate one’s faith and spirituality into the process of therapy. His therapeutic approach involves the modalities of CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), the Gottman method, and Family Systems theory. He also has an interest in ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) and Existential therapy.
Prior to his career in counseling, Stephen was a pastor for 13 years in several churches both in Southern California and Washington State. He recently moved to Colorado in 2023 to further pursue his career as a therapist and when not working, Stephen enjoys the great outdoors (hiking and camping), both listening to and playing music, watching baseball, playing golf, reading a variety of literature and watching movies.
